Spam Protection: PDF Spam and Protecting Your kids

Posted By: Mary Maseko on December 10, 2008 at 7:20 pm

For a spammer, the use of PDF files is advantageous because PDF files are so commonly used in the business world. In fact, several companies allow or even require their business email systems to deliver these documents to the recipient. This makes it very likely that this PDF spam will reach the user’s inbox.

The use of junk mail with PDF attachments takes up even more Internet bandwidth. This is because PDF files are generally much larger than the embedded pictures and graphics used in image spam. Image spam is typically in GIF format; PDF files are upto 3 times the size of these files.

Protecting Your Kids

Like all other Internet users, children are just as susceptible to receiving spam as are adults. And because spam is an equal opportunity menace, kids are just as likely to receive spam that contains adult and pornographic material. While there is really no way to totally eliminate the possibility of your kids receiving spam, there are steps you can take to minimize it.

Whitelists – Set up an email account for your child that “whitelists” only specific email addresses. A whitelist is just a list of trusted and approved email addresses. For example, you can have the addresses of your child’s grandparents, aunts and uncles whitelisted. Whenever email is received from any of the whitelisted addresses, it goes directly to your child’s inbox. All other email addresses are blocked.

Spammers tend to direct the dictionary attacks at the large email companies, which have a large number of customers, which can be your kid.

It is very important to educate your children on the dangers of spam and how to handle it if they do receive any in their inbox.

Learn How To Keep Your Xbox 360 Cool – 5 Tips

Posted By: Marc Sandford on December 10, 2008 at 7:10 pm

In order to get a jump on the competition, the Xbox 360 was rushed to completion far too rapidly. The legacy of this is that over 30 percent of these machines have a red ring of death breakdown. The Xbox 360 is a fragile device due to poor design and manufacture.

Its cooling system is inadequate and barely keeps up with the heat output of it’s circuitry. If the cooling system fails to work properly, the heat interacts with it’s design flaws which brings about the red ring of death. Not allowing your Xbox to overheat is imperative if you wish to avoid the ring of death.

This article will present different ways to keep your Xbox cool.

1.) While most people are not going to intentionally close off the cooling vents, there are many unintentional ways of doing this. These will involve putting the Xbox on very soft or shaggy surfaces that block local cooling currents such as pillows, beds, soft rugs and sofas.

2.) Be careful to place the Xbox in an environment that is well ventilated. This means that the Xbox should not be placed in cabinets, bookcases, racks, or any other confined spaces. It certainly doesn’t make any sense to exercise great care in keeping the cooling vents open while placing the machine in a confined space where air can’t reach it. Oversights like this are commonplace because most people tend to place things in a way that saves space.

3.) The Xbox can be better ventilated by tipping it on it’s side so that it gets greater exposure to the open air. It may be helpful to use a small external fan to cool your console.

4.) Avoid areas next to sources of heat such as furnaces, radiators, heater vents, stoves and other heat generating electronics. Additionally, make sure not to expose your Xbox to direct sunlight.

5.) In addition to keeping the Xbox cool, we can’t overlook the cooling requirements of the power adapter or power brick. We all have a natural tendency to place the power adapter on the floor without a second thought. But if it is on a heavy carpet, the free flow of air will be obstructed. Keep the power adapter cool by moving it up off the floor onto a level and solid surface with plenty of exposure to the air.

The suggestions in this article are preventative measures for a brand new Xbox. However, if this is your first run in with the ring of death, then these steps should be your first actions to take. Hopefully, the heat made your Xbox shut down before doing any lasting damage.

What You Need To Know About RAR Files

Posted By: Alix Montoya on December 10, 2008 at 2:34 pm

If you are a student, you have probably experienced needing additional space in your laptop for the myriads of projects, notes, reports and other documents that you need for school. I’m sure you have also subscribed for free internet storage services which virtually increase your disk space by a great amount. These services have become quite the necessity for the person who needs his or her files on the go.

If you have a subscription for a service such as this, then you know the many benefits that it gives you. It allows you to be able to access your files wherever you are, whenever you want. This is especially important, especially if you are in one of those all-nighters that students, businessmen or any other kind of person is usually at, and needs immediate access to important files.

Surely, the global market place is a great reason for us to subscribe to these services but they aren’t the only reasons. Most of the time, there are online storage services that virtually give your hard drive a boost in space for as much as 15 gigabytes. That’s almost 15% more disk space than the average drive. This is extremely invaluable for those who deal with data that are usually big in size such as videos and graphics.

There’s only one drawback of using data transfer systems such as online storage sites. Files can usually handle only a certain amount of uploads and downloads before they get corrupted. A file type is not necessarily the most secure when it comes to transfers over the internet and this could spell disaster for you and for you documents.

Archives help shield your files from corruption caused by excessive transferring. If a certain file type is uploaded and downloaded too many times, putting it in archive form first is a great way to prevent corruption to the original file type. A word document will retain its properties once the archiving software returns it to its normal state.

There are now a lot of services online that also offer this kind of service for free. They give you the option to zip or unzip your files from any compression or archiving software there is. The internet has many threats when it comes with file transfers and data corruption, however it also gives a lot of solutions as well.
