28The Cordon or Wall System of Growing Grapes
Posted By: Abraham Kiyoski on February 28, 2009 at 3:34 amThere are those who have tried out the Labruscan varieties from Ontario. These cannot be grown under Guyot pruning methods but must be cultivated by a simpler system such as one main rod plus six strong side growths, which are pruned back hard each January.
In the spring choose the stoutest and strongest growth and tie this perpendicularly to a stake. Cut out all other growths and concentrate on this one. Do not carry out any summer pruning, just let this strong rod develop naturally. Next January cut this rod back to within 3 buds of its base. When the 3 buds grow out, keep them, tying them to stakes or bamboos so as to form a goblet shape. Do not do any summer pruning.
Once again in January cut back these 3 canes to within two buds of their base. Thus you will see that you are now producing your goblet-shaped bush with 6 branches. Each one of these 6 branches may carry six or seven bunches of grapes and the following January again they will be cut back to within two buds.
Once in position the rod is cut back, by about a quarter, and then the shoot which develops from the end bud is tied along the bottom wire until it reaches the next cordon where it is pruned, in the summer, to just above a bud. The laterals or side growths that develop from the lower parts of the cane are tied to the top wire when they are long enough and they are then pruned.
Powdery Mildew causes white patches to appear on the leaves and then the fruit, then the young shoots. Individual grapes that are attacked will either fall or go rotten. Vines that are mulched are seldom attacked with mildew, and when the young laterals are properly spaced out, so that they are not overcrowded, this disease seldom appears. Dusting the plants with a fine sulphur dust largely cures the trouble when seen.
Those who don’t believe in straw mulching may like to know that the prunings and foliage of healthy vines may be roto-tilled shallowly into the soil, in November, and so help to keep up the humus content. By rotary hoeing you smash up the prunings which then soon decompose.

28The Goblet System of Growing Grapes
Posted By: Abraham Kiyoski on February 28, 2009 at 3:32 amThere are those who have tried out the Labruscan varieties from Ontario. These cannot be grown under Guyot pruning methods but must be cultivated by a simpler system such as one main rod plus six strong side growths, which are pruned back hard each January.
They could also be grown on the ‘Grow as you like’ system, being allowed to scramble over a trellis or cover a fence or wall. Under this system very little pruning is necessary, though it does pay to cut back the fruiting laterals in the summer at two leaves above a bunch.
Once again the vine is allowed to grow naturally the first year and then it is cut down to within two buds of its base. The strongest of the shoots that result is kept and is tied perpendicularly to a stout bamboo cane. All side growths that develop are pinched out with the thumb and forefinger to their base. When all the leaves have fallen, the long cane should first of all be tied to the stake and then should be carefully bent so that it can be tied along the lower wire. This bending of the cane, at an angle of 90 degrees, is important because the flow of sap is checked.
Do not, however, allow 12 rods to be produced or you may not be able to ripen the fruit. Stick to 6 or 7 rods tied to strong bamboos or stakes to form a goblet and gradually these shoots will bear more bunches of grapes up to, say, 8 per rod. Do not be tempted to reduce the pruning by cutting say to 5 buds, and do not be tempted either to try and make the vine crop more heavily.
Some people give each vine one stake, 4 feet out of the ground, and then, instead of tying the rods out to ‘form a goblet, they merely tie the tips of the rods to the top of the stakes to form an inverted cone. By the way, do not allow the young cane to go on growing after the requisite number of bunches of grapes have been produced. You should always pinch out the growing point at 3 leaves beyond the top hunch.
When growing a vine against a wall the pruning may be similar. The rod instead of being taken along a lower wire can be trained, with a main rod growing upwards and with side permanent rods trained out at right angles. Thus a series of horizontal cordons are formed and the laterals they produce are pruned back hard each January. These are tied to wires stretched tightly in between the main wires.

27Signs of Depression. What Depression Is And What Is Not
Posted By: Arturo Ovies on February 27, 2009 at 3:58 amThese are the typical symptoms of depression are:
Constant feelings of pessimism and hopelessness
Sad or Anxious Moods which persist for days
Constant feelings of being incapable and of worthlessness
Major difficulty in concentrating and remembering
Complete loss of interest in hobbies and activities previously enjoyed
Low levels of energy; sense of fatigue
Extreme scenarios of sleep – either very little sleep or oversleeping
Decrease in appetite leading to weight loss
Increase in eating leading to weight gain
Entertaining thoughts of suicide
It very difficult for people with depression to shake off their feelings of sadness and misery. They have to be treated with medication and therapy to help them overcome these overwhelming feelings. I know what it feels like since I have been dealing with depression for most of my adult life. This is generally the first of the many signs of depression.
Depression is a very complex emotional state and it has not been easy finding the exact causes of it. However, with the help of years of research, it is being argued that the following factors could have a role to play in a person with depression.
Genetic Factors
It has been found that depression is often inherited. This has led to more research into genetics and what role that has to play in the transmitting of any depression from generation to generation. This however is not uniformly true, adding to the complexity of the problem. Researchers therefore conclude that it is more likely that a person may suffer from depression if any other family member is already suffering from it. However, even if there have been no instances of depression in the family, it does not mean that you will not suffer from it.
Psychological Predisposition
Some persons may be more vulnerable to depression than others. Scientists think that if people already have a certain predisposition for negativity, for instance, like persons who have very low self-esteem, a constantly pessimistic outlook or a persistently negative attitude, those people may be more likely than others to suffer from depression. Also, some are more likely to feel overwhelmed by situations of stress and anxiety, which may also lead to depression.
Physical Factors
Many doctors have noticed a correlation between physical illness and depression. Those that suffer from a heart attack or stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and other hormonal disorders seem to be more likely to exhibit signs of depression. The recovery from a physical illness is often hindered by depression, and often the depression remains even after the physical ailment is resolved.
Environmental Stresses
There is not believed to be any direct link between negative events occurring in one’s life and the occurrence of depression in a person. However, there is general agreement that certain environmental factors and circumstances will play a role in how the person responds emotionally to the negative events. Death, divorce, loss of a job, financial insecurity all can potentially cause depression in a person.
It is very important to stress how deeply depression can impact a person’s life.
Every positive feeling is dampened, being replaced by negative thoughts. The person can no longer feel happy or content or enthusiastic even about the most positive developments in his life. Continuing to do normal routine work becomes difficult and the person finds it extremely tough to get through even one day’s work. Most of the times, the person does not even realize that he is going through these extreme phases and it is up to the family and friends to try and recognize depression in their loved one.
In my case were friends who had noticed some of the noticeable signs of depression and they brought it to my attention.
With effort and help you can overcome many of the signs of depression, it is not a “walk on the park” but doable.
You deserve a better life, so please seek help for your depression. If I could do it, so could do.

27A Nostalgic Feeling with Nintendo Commercials
Posted By: Fiona Fidelis on February 27, 2009 at 3:55 amNintendo has been a constant in the video game industry over the last 20 years, even though in recent years it hasnt competed as strongly as it used to. Still, there are some beloved games attached to all forms of Nintendo consoles, and along with those brilliant games there have been some great Nintendo commercials. Nintendo was known for making some fun ads, and in some cases theyve created a following of their own as legendary as the games theyre advertising. There are a lot of options online for finding these Nintendo commercials, so here are a few sources to start with.
The number one destination for Nintendo commercials is also the bastion for any other kind of old-school ” or new school ” videos, YouTube. Simply plugging in a search for Nintendo commercials will give you a boat load of results, and youll most likely be entertained for a few hours. There are ads on YouTube spanning from the original Nintendo to the new Wii, so try not to get too addicted while youre at work.
Unfortunately, with all the different videos on YouTube, you can get side-tracked pretty easily. As an alternative you may want to check out RetroJunk.com, which houses essentially everything retro. Just check out the section for commercials and youll be able to find some Nintendo ads quickly, starting in the 80s. You have to dig a little deeper once youre in the 90s, but Nintendo created some of the best and most popular video game commercials in those two decades, so youre bound to find some very easily.
Many people posting in various places online will try and claim that one commercial is better than the other. Most of the time, theyre referring to how funny a commercial is rather than which commercial is technically the best in the context of a marketing tool. Usually the best commercials feature cheesy actors playing the video game being advertised; whether the acting was cheesy on purpose or not is likely a different debate.
The only downside most of these commercials share in common is the poor quality. While newer commercials ” which arent as fun in spirit as the 80s and 90s ” are often pristine, the Nintendo and Super Nintendo commercials are bad rips from VHS tapes. However if you can suffer through the quality issues then youre in for hours of entertainment ” great news if youve recently cancelled your cable to save money.
