Awnings : What Are Your Options?

There are various types of awning but basically an awning can be defined as a cover that extends over a garden space, window or door. Most awnings on the market are made of weatherproof fabric but some come in materials such as aluminum. An awning can protect a part of your home from the elements, which may mean as a block against harsh sunlight in hotter countries or to provide protection from the wind and cold in cooler parts of the world. Awnings can also protect outdoors furniture from fading or water damage.

You will find many different types of awning on the market from small to large, from manually operated to motorized, remotely controlled varieties. A typical example is the type of awning that extends from the wall of a home out into the garden generally over a patio – this creates a covered seating area. Another type of awning is the freestanding, portable type that can be moved to the desired location. A smaller kind of awning covers a window or door, these are often popular in hot countries as they help to regulate the temperature in the house and act as a shield from strong sunshine.

Freestanding or portable awnings are unattached and can be moved around as and when required. They usually come as a frame with fabric attached and stand on poles. Some awnings have two poles and can often be seen being used by caravan owners, other types like the canopy types stand on four poles. A canopy is more likely to be used if you want to put a table and seating underneath while a two-pole awning acts as a shade to protect from the weather.

Fixed awnings are stationary and are permanent. They are installed to a fixed position in the area of choice be that your garden patio or over a window or door. This type of awning usually comes in weatherproofed fabric and there are a wide variety of colors styles and shapes to choose from. It is also possible to find a fixed awning made in metal if you would prefer this option to fabric.

Retractable awnings can be rolled away when they aren’t being used and many now come with sensors that enable them to detect when to roll out i.e. in strong sunlight and when to retract for example when the wind becomes strong – thus avoiding damage to the awning. Many can be operated by remote control and have features such as integrated lights and heaters. These come in a variety of colors and styles and can offer extra protection to the exterior of your home.
