One of the most stressful times for a family is moving. There are so many things that must be done and taken care of that one might make simple mistakes causing in some major headaches down the line. Accidentally shipping a box to the wrong address, damaging an irreplaceable item, or even leaving something behind are just some of the problems that can arise during a major move. But if you follow these steps you can prevent any problem from causing you and your family stress during this hectic time.
Firstly and most importantly you are going to need boxes. Once you calculate how many boxes you need it is safe to always get extra. You never know what could go wrong. Your calculations could be off or maybe one of your boxes breaks. After you have boxes you are going to need strong tape to hold the boxes together. You will also need bubble wrap, or packing peanuts to securely cushion anything that can be damaged.
As you are packing your boxes create a checklist. Individually number each box and keep track of what it will contain. This way you wont have to dig through each box just to find a single item. Also be specific when you label what is inside the box. This will make the unpacking process much easier. You can also color coordinate the boxes to its corresponding room. Designate a color for each room and using a marker or a sticker and mark each box accordingly. That way the movers will know where to take each box.
You can also pack corresponding items together. You can pack TVs and appliances with electrical cords, lamps with light bulbs, and pictures with the nails and hooks. This will make the installation process so much easier in the new home.
Besides boxes you can also pack up your luggage and duffel bags as well. Pack them with clothes, towels, sheets, etc. It will save you some boxes for the more bulky items. Each family member can pack their own personal items into their own duffel and book bags.
Any valuables should be packed and taken with you. Be ready with receipts and photos of your valued items just in case they are damaged and you want to take out a claim. Also don’t pack any important documents in any of the boxes the movers will be handling, such as bank statements, birth certificates, diplomas, etc. Any important documentation should be included in whatever you will be carrying.
Following these steps will make any move go off without a hitch. You will be prepared for anything that will come your way. By avoiding the potential stress you and your family will be able to quickly integrate yourselves in your new home.
