Peter Molyneux surprised gamers recently with the announcement that Fable 3 would be coming to the Xbox 360. Last time there was a console generation gap between sequels, so it’s interesting to see that the Xbox 360 is getting the next game – it points to an extended lifespan for the Xbox 360 if the first party is still announcing games. Albion will have progressed in Fable 3 and we will see the beginnings of the steam powered age.
“Revolution” is in the air we are told, and it’s clear that this is supposed to refer not only to the storyline but also to the gameplay. We guess that the developer wants to expand the game beyond the traditional RPG even more than was done in Fable 2.
In the story though, the revolt is not going to be peaceful as it’s been hinted that machines of war will be built and the player will have to incite the in-game population. Hopefully this will lead to a more immersive experience as the single player game has always left you feeling a bit detached from the world you’re playing in.
Fable 3 need to retain its RPG elements and improve on them. We are all for adding new gameplay ideas to games, and Fable 2 did this with its economic and social model, but in truth, if it doesn’t retain the core RPG features and improve on them, it will disappoint its fans.
Fable 2 did lose some of its RPG charm, and Fable 3 needs to re-instate it. While the one-button magic control in Fable 2 may have felt like a step forward, it killed spell casting and rendered magic utterly one dimensional, reducing the game to a hack and slash.

Fable 3 also has to remember to entertain the player, to reward them. The ending of Fable 2 was one that made sense in a narrative form, but was unsatisfactory to the gamer, and that is not a very good idea commercially when you want people to buy the third game. We need to be promised wish fulfilment.
With Uncharted 2 being talked about as a “generational leap” for graphics on the PlayStation 3, Microsoft will want its first party developers to prove that there is still untapped potential in the Xbox 360. With that in mind, Fable 3 will need to debut some amazing new graphics techniques.
As it has just been announced, there’s no release date for Fable 3 yet, but late 2010 is quoted, and the game will only be available for the Xbox 360.
