Molyneux Announces Fable 3 For Xbox 360

Fable 3 is coming – let the citizens of Albion, and gamers of Xbox 360, rejoice. The gap between the original Fable and its sequel lasted between console generations, but this time we are getting a second dose of Fable on the Xbox 360. Albion, the land of Fable, will this time be showing signs of the rise of industrialisation, so steam powered machines are likely to feature.

The developer has stated his desire to always surprise the player with new gameplay, and warned to expect “Revolution”. Now, it’s unclear whether this is supposed to refer to gameplay in Fable 3 or to the storyline, but it’s a fair bet that Molyneux means both, aiming for a more expansive gameplay than a traditional RPG, and something that Fable 2 tried for. But he’s also likely to mean within the game, because he likes parallels like that.

It won’t be a bloodless, peaceful revolution though, because you will get to drive the peasants to rise up (probably getting to choose between using them as cannon fodder and arming them properly, knowing Fable), and you have to build “machines of war”. All in all, hopefully this will make the gamer more part of their surroundings in Fable 3, as previous games have always felt a tad detached.

If Fable 3 is to succeed though, it does need to ensure that it doesn’t lose sight of its strengths – it is a classic RPG. Fable 2 started to add to this, and while the additional mechanics were interesting, ultimately neither the economy nor the personal relationships side added enough to consider the game anything more than an RPG.

Fable 2 did lose some of its RPG charm, and Fable 3 needs to re-instate it. While the one-button magic control in Fable 2 may have felt like a step forward, it killed spell casting and rendered magic utterly one dimensional, reducing the game to a hack and slash.

Fable 3 also needs to entertain us. Fable 2 did until its “oh so clever” end that just left the gamer feeling annoyed and disappointed. That’s just not a good idea in an entertainment product. Games are about wish fulfilment and Fable 3 needs to remember that.

Lastly, as Uncharted 2 shows a generational leap in graphics from its original for the PS3, Fable 3 needs to show that the Xbox 360 still has more power to be unleashed and as Molyneux heads up one of the last first-party development studios at Microsoft, they have got to be looking to this game to unleash all the power of the console.

As it has just been announced, there’s no release date for Fable 3 yet, but late 2010 is quoted, and the game will only be available for the Xbox 360.
