Hailing from the region of Brittany, France, the Brittany Spaniel is a creature considered as an excellent gun dog and a very superb hunter. This French dog first appeared in the 1800s and gained recognition in 1938. The Brittany has been used and recognized as a working dog and until now, even though at most times it is adopted as a pet, its natural instinct to hunt is till strong inside of him.

As a naturally active creature, the Brittany Spaniel has a body of an athlete dog, a well-built and lean looking musculature. However, this body build does not make this dog heavy but instead; it makes it look light and able. Its head encloses a rounded skull and bears a pair of intelligent, alert and curious pair of eyes.

The legs of this dog are strong, short and lean and are just perfect for its sprightly rendezvous. Its walk, often, is a manifestation of easy, light and carefree gait. The Brittany Spaniel has a short tail and this sometimes may come out inborn but there are some that are born with long tails; because of this, these tails are docked to appear small.

According to breeders, there are two different varieties of this breed namely the American Brittany and the French Brittany. The American Brittany is said to only accept the colors orange, white, liver and their combinations as the qualified colors of the breed. The French variety accepts more than just these three colors because sometimes it accepts black, too.

There had been many contradictions too regarding the assignment of the name Brittany Spaniel since many claim that this dog is not of the spaniel kind but of the pointer or setter. This dog appears spaniel-like but it never does the spaniel job like game flushing, but does more of the pointer job such as sniffing and pointing games. In the US, the use of spaniel for this breed’s name has been discouraged and therefore this dog is simply called the American Brittany there.

As a gun and hunting dog, the Brittany is very easy to train, obedient, sensitive and good-natured. It has a carefree and sprightly spirit and it loves to run free in the open. Because of its infinite energy, it is recommended to allow this dog to run with leash and without leash everyday.

In some cases, Brittanies become rambunctious and incontrollable but this is only blamed to an incorrect training and rearing. If they are improperly or un-socialized at all, they may become shy, aloof and fearful of new people. However, if they are exposed to other people and creatures early on, they can become friendly, gentle and good-natured.

This breed needs companionship and love from the master for without it, it has a tendency to become ill-behaved, to the point of being destructive and neurotic. For a living condition, this breed suits best in a cold and damp environment and a wide- spaced house and backyard. Among all the dog breeds, the Brittany Spaniel is the only breed with more winnings in the American dual championships, a competition of both conformation shows and field competitions.
