A virtual private network (VPN) is a network arrangement that extends a private network and usually the resources that are included in the network through public networks such as the Web. This is what allows a host terminal or computer to send out and receive data throughout a public or even shared network. It acts as if the connections and various configurations were exclusive with all aspects of security, functionality and of course management policies part of the network. This is typically done by establishing a point-to-point connection through the use of truly dedicated connections, file encryption or a mix or the two.
